Sterling Connection (formerly 55PLUS) is a program offered to people 50 years of age or older, designed to give you advantages when you are sick and advantages when you are well. It is FREE to join and the program offers you a variety of programs, services and events throughout the year. Members are a member at both their local hospital, JCHC, and at Bryan Health. Sterling Connection is not an insurance plan or a Medicare supplement. Click here for more information on Sterling Connection. JCHC offers support groups for:
Parkinson’s Disease – This support group is designed for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and their family and caregiver’s. An educational program is presented each month, along with an opportunity to discuss current needs and issues with others who are dealing with Parkinson’s Disease. The support group typically meets on the second Monday of each month at 10 a.m. at JCHC’s downtown meeting room, 512 C St. Reservations are not required and attendance is free and with no obligation. Alzheimer’s Disease Caregivers – This support group is designed for the caregivers, loved ones and family members of those who have Alzheimer’s Disease. An educational program is presented each month, along with an opportunity to discuss current needs and issues with others who are dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease in their family. While the group is not specifically designed for those who have Alzheimer’s Disease themselves, some families have found the group helpful for their loved ones with Alzheimer’s. The support group typically meets on the fourth Monday or Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Cedarwood assisted living, 828 22nd St. Reservations are not required, but please contact facilitator Lana Likens at (402) 729-6855 to confirm meeting date. The JCHC Auxiliary is a group of women and men who wish to support Jefferson Community Health in a variety of ways, including volunteer assistance. The Auxiliary holds an annual fund-raising event each spring, the Salad Festival. The Auxiliary provides scholarships for students entering or continuing education in medical professions, Christmas gifts for Gardenside long-term care residents, and commemorative baby spoons for newborns at JCHC. Jefferson Community Health Center is a member of Safe Kids Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Saline, and Thayer counties. Safe Kids offers education and information on safety for children.
Prenatal Education Classes
Prenatal education classes are offered three times a year at JCHC. They are open to those who are planning to deliver their babies here at JCHC, as well as those who are planning to deliver their babies elsewhere. The class covers changes which occur during pregnancy, knowing when you are in labor and what to expect, breathing, relaxation and other coping techniques, selected your support team, pain relief measures, recovery following delivery, newborn procedures in the hospital, breast feeding basics, and more. The $35 cost of the class covers all instruction and a free copy of the book “What to Expect the First Year.” Pre-registration is required. Child Safety Seat Education
JCHC has two certified child passenger safety technicians on staff to check car seats for recalls, make sure car seats are installed correctly in vehicles, and answer questions about child safety seats. Safety seat check up events are offered several times a year in our community by JCHC and Safe Kids Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Saline and Thayer counties. Seat checks are offered for all newborns born at JCHC prior to the baby leaving the hospital. . Individual safety seats checks are offered by appointment by calling Sharon Vandegrift RN, child safety seat technician, at (402) 729-3351. There is no charge for safety seats checks, either at an event or by appointment. If it is determined that a new safety seat would be safer for the child, seats will be offered for a suggested donation if available. Classes at JCHC are available in both individual and group settings. Diabetes Self-Management Education is a service comvered by Medicare and many private insurance companies. A physician referral is required to attend education. If you are interested in education and would like to schedule an appointment, please call Jill Duis RN, Certified Diabetes Educator, at (402) 729-3351, extension 4164.
Smart Moves, My Life, My Health is a one-year lifestyle change program which is proven to help people with prediabetes make lasting changes and cut their risk of type 2 diabetes. Participants meet weekly with a trained lifestyle coach in small groups. The class focusses on healthy eating, staying active and problem solving skills. The $150 registration fee includes a 6-month individual membership to the Bob and Wauneta Burkley Wellness Center.
