Speech Therapist Offers Services

FAIRBURY – Speech Therapist Amy Nash M.S. CCC-SLP says that many people don’t realize the many different types of services that speech therapists can offer: including not only help in speech, but memory, word finding, swallowing, cognition, and voice.

Nash is the newest addition to the team of therapists at Jefferson Community Health Center’s Rehab and Sports Clinic. She offers services to several local hospitals and nursing homes, including JCHC Rehab and Sports Clinic.

A native of Deshler, Nash is familiar with southeast Nebraska and is glad to be able to practice in and around her hometown.

There is a need for more awareness of how speech therapists can help a person, she said.

“Speech therapy is not just speech therapy,” she said.

She encouraged those who have concerns with memory, word finding, swallowing, cognition and voice to ask their doctor if speech therapy might be able to help them. Often there are ways to help.

“If you are having these types of issues, don’t assume there’s no relief – find out if speech therapy can help you,” she said.

Speech therapy for medical necessity is typically covered by Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurance companies. Check with your insurance carrier to determine coverage of speech therapy.

Nash’s scheduling at the JCHC Rehab and Sports Clinic is based on the needs of her patients.

Nash earned her bachelor of science degree in psychology from Doane College. She worked in the summers at Camp Easter Seals, and says that helped her to understand what speech therapy could offer. She earned her Masters in Speech Language Pathology at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

She and her husband, Josh – who is a teacher, coach and athletic director for Deshler High School – live in Deshler and have three children: Paiton, 10; Gavin, 9; and Easton, 6.

Outside of work, Nash enjoys the outdoors, baking and cooking, attending her children’s activities, and spending time with family and friends.

Anyone who would like to meet Nash is invited to JCHC Rehab and Sport’s Clinic for a free ice cream sundae on Thursday, May 29, between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
